Ceremony marks next major milestone for Greenland USA as phase one of Metropolis development nears completion

(LOS ANGELES) – March 31, 2017 – Greenland USA, a leading developer of modern and transformative properties, today celebrated the forthcoming Hotel Indigo® Los Angeles Downtown, a uniquely local and vibrant hotel for all looking to experience downtown Los Angeles, with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event. The 18-story, 350-room boutique hotel is located at Metropolis, a new, 6.3-acre mixed-use property in downtown, and will officially begin accepting reservations beginning April 15, 2017.

To celebrate this exciting event, the ceremony included remarks from Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilmember Jose Huizar, and Assembly Member Miguel Santiago. Additionally, Mme. Yun Zhang, Executive Vice President of Greenland Group; Haiyan Liu, Counsellor for Commercial Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles; Hu Gang, CEO of Greenland USA; and Jolyon Bulley, COO of InterContinental Hotel Groups, delivered remarks to highlight this major milestone for the Metropolis project and speak to the transformation and revitalization of downtown Los Angeles. The event included representatives from partners IHG® (InterContinental Hotels Group); Gensler, architecture and design; Hirsch Bedner Associates, interior design; AECOM Tishman, project manager; and Webcor, general contractor.

"We are here to unveil the centerpiece of the economic resurgence in Los Angeles with Hotel Indigo," Mayor Garcetti said in his remarks. "Thanks to the vision and leadership of Greenland Group for bringing 350 much-needed hotel rooms to the city. We have a spectacular partnership with Greenland USA, who transformed a patch of dirt in a just a few years into these spectacular buildings and surroundings. With Hotel Indigo, we can bring more conventions to this city with more hotel rooms, and this hotel will help to do just that."

Located in the heart of downtown with convenient access to the burgeoning art, culture, entertainment and nightlife scene of the city, Hotel Indigo will allow all who visit the city to experience the thriving creativity, urban vibe and diversity of downtown Los Angeles.

“The project makes the first impression for people coming to downtown. It took Greenland only three months from the time of the first meeting to the time of ground breaking – it takes most companies two years,” Mayor Garcetti added, noting that, “both Greenland USA and the city government team have a can-do attitude” which ensured the project’s success.

Hotel Indigo’s eclectic but cohesive interiors will pull influence from prominent periods of Los Angeles’s dynamic past from the 1890s to 1920s, including the Fiesta de las Flores, which is now the Rose Parade, the theaters and galas of the Golden Age of entertainment downtown, the prohibition period, and the Jewel district. Tailored elements relating to these historic time periods will surprise and delight guests, along with the contemporary approach to the extensive amenities and delightful views from its top-level bar.

As the first hotel developed for a Greenland USA property and the first hotel developed and operated in North America for Greenland Group, Hotel Indigo represents an important step forward for Greenland Group’s globalization strategy and expansion to consumer-based industries. Hotel Indigo exemplifies Greenland USA’s vision for transformative and modern properties that support the local economy. Completed on time, the hotel will help meet the city’s needs and local leaders’ call for increased tourism facilities, allowing visitors and city-dwellers alike to take advantage of everything the downtown area has to offer. The hotel will be managed by InterContinental Hotels Group, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, which currently has nearly 5,200 hotels in its portfolio.

“This project is a win-win example of a partnership between US and China. Other people were not able to put together the Metropolis project, but Greenland could. These aren’t just 350 room, but 350 quality room,” said Huiyan Liu, Counsellor for Commercial Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles. He added, “We should not only look at the number of jobs the project has created, but know these are good paying jobs and they will have a domino effect on the local economy.”

During the course of the hotel construction, 2,700 jobs have been created, including jobs for 1,915 construction workers, among whom, 483 are apprentices. Additionally, 25 labor unions and more than 200 local businesses have participated in the hotel construction. As planned, Hotel Indigo now has 151 employees, with 90 percent hired locally. During its first year of operation (from April to December 2017), the hotel operating income is expected to reach $24 million, contributing $5 million in tax revenue to the local economy.

“Greenland has stepped in and provided two of the most critical needs to downtown Los Angeles, and that’s more residential units and more hotel rooms,” Councilmember Jose Huizar said in his remarks. “We are practically building a city within a city, and what’s driving that is more people living here and more people visiting downtown. Greenland USA has filled a great need here in downtown Los Angeles, and we’re looking forward to doing more.”

In addition to the opening of Hotel Indigo, Residential Tower 1 at Metropolis, a 38-story building with 308 luxury condominium units and amenities, is set to open officially for residents in April 2017, completing phase one of the development. The second phase of Metropolis includes a curated retail experience and Residential Towers 2 and 3. Phase two is slated for completion in 2019. At the peak of construction, there are roughly 1,700 construction workers work on the site. Overall, the Metropolis project is expected to create 15,000 jobs during the course of its development.
